Johns Hopkins University Landscape Assistant in Baltimore, Maryland
Johns Hopkins University is seeking Grounds Workers to work on a temporary, casual basis in the Johns Hopkins Facilities and Real Estate, Grounds Department on the Homewood Campus. Hours begin in mid-May and will continue through the summer. This position functions as a working member of the University's grounds crew performing various duties to maintain and assure an attractive appearance of the campus grounds through the execution of daily and planned maintenance activities. Previous experience in a related field is preferred. The successful candidate will have the ability to work with a minimum of supervision or in groups, to communicate interpersonally, to precisely follow all safety precautions and work instructions, and to lift up to fifty pounds. Must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver's license.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Pick up trash on a daily basis.
Mow, trim, and edge lawns.
Plant and transplant trees, shrubs, and flowers on campus.
Weed and mulch planting beds.
Prune and trim plants under supervision.
Cut down or pull out trees and shrubs as needed.
Rake and dispose of yard waste and debris.
Observe all safety precautions and use equipment properly to avoid harming self and others, and damaging property.Maintain equipment and work area in clean and orderly condition.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education/Experience/Skills & Abilities Required:
High school degree or equivalent preferred.
Appropriate valid driver's license with a good driving record. Ability to drive a light truck preferred.
Ability to operate equipment such as mowers, trimmers, blowers, small tractors and other equipment used in grounds keeping work preferred.
Knowledge of proper planting procedures preferred.
Ability to work outdoors.
Ability to lift, carry or otherwise move and position objects and materials weighing up to 50 lbs.
Ability to stand, walk or otherwise move about campus on a continuous basis.
Ability to interact and/or work with faculty, students, staff, and visitors in a respectful and courteous manner.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to read and write to maintain records and work schedules and to read work orders.
Starting Salary Range ($s): $10.10/hour

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.
The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
